Professional translator

I've been born to German-speaking Austrian parents but was raised in English-speaking Canada. Due to this fact and to the fact that I competed my Master's in Austria, I am fluent in both languages and am fond of translating from German into English. Since 2000, when I started my translator's career, I've managed to translate millions of words in a great range of fields, from fiction to medicine.

My name is Vanessa Walsh and I'm currently working as a freelance translator and language teacher in Bavaria, Germany. I have an MA in Translation Sciences from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and a BA from Queen's University in Canada in Foreign Languages and Intl. Studies (French/German). I grew up in Ontario, Canada, and English is my mother language. I have many years of immersion in my source languages, years of uninterrupted translation experience, and an excellent command of English, my target language. I specialize in medical translation. Further experience includes literary, academic, website, and business/marketing translation, and I have translated several documents including novels, academic papers, scripts, business plans, and more, from FRA-ENG and DEU-ENG. I also work with technical translations and/or post-editing.

I am a passionate linguist with many years of experience in translation and interpretation. I hold an M.Phil in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, with a specialization in Translation & Interpretation, and also a C1 from Alliance française of Madras. I work predominantly between English and French. I translate mainly literary, general, administrative texts as well as scientific articles and reviews. Winner of translation grant from Centre national du livre, Paris.

I've worked for a few decades as a translator and storyteller for governmental and quasi-governmental agencies before moving on to being a freelance translator and copywriter. Especially well-versed in human sciences, marketing, and information technology. I am almost native in Russian and also translate from German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Polish. With English as my first language, I grew up in a bilingual country where I was exposed to both French and English, hence my excellent mastery of my source language. I studied microbiology at university, then obtained a postgraduate diploma to teach biology, which I have been teaching for six years now. As a science teacher and translator with three years` experience in the industry, I am able to handle a variety of texts, and am particularly interested in science-related fields. I have experience in medical, legal, economic/financial as well as editorial translation. I also translate certificates, transcripts and academic testimonials. I do not accept to work in fields which I do not master, and do not work into my source language because I could not guarantee the quality of the work. I look forward to working with you.

If I had to describe myself: a linguaphile. All of my life, I have been passionate about languages and how they apply to our day-to-day, from work to art to shopping and everything in-between. I'm an avid reader and love researching new methods or applications for linguistics and translations, especially website localization. //// I currently work both as a project manager for translations as well as a freelance translator for French to English texts.
